Celebrating Mandela Day with 67 Minutes of Yoga in Alexandra

Updated: Aug 22

In the heart of Alexandra, a powerful celebration took place in honor of Mandela Day on July 18th, 2024. Stretch Education SA, in collaboration with Move In Awe, brought the transformative practice of yoga to the streets, creating a meaningful experience for the students of East Bank and Kwabhekilanga High Schools. These students, who regularly participate in our daily yoga classes during their Life Orientation periods, joined together to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela through 67 minutes of Yoga4Mandela.

With over 2,350 learners at each school benefiting weekly from yoga, breathwork, and meditation, this event was more than just a tribute; it was a continuation of our commitment to their physical and mental well-being. The theme, Yoga4Mandela, symbolized our dedication to investing in the youth of Alexandra, empowering them to manage stress, improve focus, and build resilience.

Our Mandela Day celebrations began at Carter Primary and Skeen Primary Schools, where we hosted a vibrant yoga session on the assembly points. In addition to yoga, our tutors took the initiative to clean the school toilets, promoting a healthy environment and good hygiene—values that align with Mandela's vision of dignity for all.

Later in the day, we gathered at Kwabhekilanga High School, where the students who have embraced yoga's benefits eagerly participated in the 67-minute session. Their enthusiasm and commitment to yoga reflect how deeply they value the practice for its ability to help them cope with academic pressures and life’s challenges.

The following day, we continued our celebrations at East Bank High School, where the learners once again showed their love for yoga. The sessions not only marked a special day of giving back but also reinforced the importance of maintaining Mandela's legacy of humanity and community.

Over the course of these two days, we experienced the true spirit of Ubuntu—coming together to uplift one another. As we reflect on this experience, we are reminded that the best way to honor Mandela is to continue nurturing the seeds of growth and wellness in the next generation.
